We surveyed frequent travelers about their sleep habits

For decades, Serta Simmons Bedding has been synonymous with sleep expertise. Yet, a common belief persists that guests inevitably experience lower quality sleep while traveling, and we set out to uncover why.

In partnership with the Global Wellness Institute’s Sleep Initiative, we conducted a survey that delved into insights on the biggest sleep disruptors for travelers — from hotel noise and sleeping hot to uncomfortable pillows. We found among those who reported traveling at least monthly and staying in hotels frequently:

  • More than 70% of travelers reported their quality of sleep was impacted when sleeping away from home.
  • Background noise levels were the top reason cited for disrupted sleep (80%) and included street and traffic noise, sounds from the hallway, elevator and other guests.
  • The top five sleep disruptors on the road also included lighting conditions, bedding, room temperature and preferred mattress feels.
  • Frequent travelers value a good night’s rest – so much so that more than half surveyed (a combined 59%) seek out properties offering sleep enhancing amenities.
  • 91% of frequent travelers are willing to pay more for sleep-enhancing features. How much more? More than 60% of guests shared they’re willing to spend up to 10% more
